Central Huron Declines NASM Use at Former Bluewater Youth Centre Property

After more than a year of discussion around the possibility of Wessuc* using the former Bluewater Youth Centre property’s sewage lagoon for NASM (Non-Agricultural Source Material) storage, Central Huron Council has formally declined. Initially, Council considered Wessuc’s proposal because it was a compatible use of the property which, at the time, was committed to a large scale agricultural/industrial use: the production of ammonia, hydrogen and nitrogen fertilizer. With the previous Hydrogen Plant option, NASM use was a logical source of supplemental revenue. However, after funding could not be secured for the Hydrogen Plant, Council expanded their search for potential lessors beyond solely agricultural and/or industrial uses. At this point, Council has determined that NASM use does not currently align with their plans for the property. Central Huron appreciated Wessuc’s interest in the property and Council wishes them continued success with their business.

Although Central Huron Council continues to investigate the option of working with the Danish Consulate to develop a circular green-energy production facility at the site, Council is also considering non-industrial options for the property.

*Wessuc is an Ontario-based, family-owned business with over 20 years experience in municipal, industrial and agricultural wastewater infrastructure and processes.
